Day 9 - Beth Ann Hill
As a parent, one of the most helpless feelings is seeing your child sick and not being able to make them better. I will never forget the time that we had to take my oldest son to the Emergency Room. As the nurses struggled to get an IV started, Watson was screaming at the top of his lungs, and my newly postpartum emotions were running high. At that moment, I would have done anything possible to bring healing to my son.
In John 4, we read about an official from Capernaum whose son was dying. He heard that Jesus was nearby, and out of parental desperation to see his child healed, he went to Cana and asked Jesus to come and heal his son. Jesus responds with this rebuke: "Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe." He was pointing out the truth that rather than seeking Jesus, people were seeking His miracles. Rather than desiring a relationship with the Savior, they, too, wished to receive the benefits of his miraculous wonders.
We see a few verses later that Jesus did heal this man's son. However, He also used that opportunity to teach him, and all those around him, that to truly believe means to have the faith and trust which comes from a relationship with Him. Do we learn from His miracles and grow in awe of Him through them? Absolutely! However, we must be careful not to be seekers of what Jesus can do, but rather seekers of Jesus, Himself. Throughout this Advent season, remind yourself daily that He, alone, is all we need!
