Day 14 - Keith Thomas

Keith Thomas

This verse refers to the purpose of John the Baptist; to bear witness to a darkened world about Christ, the true Light of the world. Through repentance and baptism, he prepared the people's minds to receive Jesus and believe in Him when He came. John’s role was not only to point people towards Jesus in the future but to identify the Messiah to Israel when he eventually arrived. Through John’s testimony of what had been prophetically revealed to him, he sought to prepare the way for others to believe in Christ.

We are similarly called to be witnesses for Christ in today’s world and to make disciples of all nations. But what does it mean to be a witness? As an attorney, I used to prepare witnesses for their deposition. They would sometimes ask, “What should I say?” My advice was always, “tell them what you observed and tell the truth – nothing more, nothing less.” The same could be said for being a witness to Christ. So often, we worry about what to say, not having all the answers, or whether the individual will believe us. We need to tell people what we have observed Christ do in our lives and how He brought us from darkness to Light. It’s that easy.
